The Pink Challenge #1
THE PINK CHALLENGE #1
(The Breast Cancer Challenge)
It's never a good day when you take a phone call from a beloved friend, to hear her normally chirpy voice say, "I've been diagnosed with breast cancer". I will never forget that moment as I retreated into the hotel bathroom (away from the happy chatter of those I was with) to help my friend navigate those first heart-wrenching moments of a diagnosis none of us ever want to hear.
But five years on, she is strong and healthy (yay) and has been given that much wanted "Five year clear" assessment. In a few weeks time it will be October and along with many others in our nation, we will align our local Sisterhood morning with the national (and global) Breast Cancer Awareness week.
In the lead up to that morning (where I'm also excited to announce that we have a fantastic guest from the McGrath Foundation speaking) we want to post a few overcoming stories.
Breast Cancer affects thousands of women and families. Statistics tell us that each year in Australia alone, 14,000 women will be diagnosed. I host a conference called Colour ... so if I was to look out over the thousands who gather each year, that is almost the number of women who would be sitting in the Sydney conference alone. Okay THAT IS WAY TOO MANY WOMEN and way too many dear families each year being faced with this challenge.
So "early detection and PREVENTION" is critical ... and I want the women in my world to not only be aware and savvy for themselves, but also for friends and family, colleagues and strangers they may encounter in life.
So over the next little period of time, we will attempt to post some stories and insight. This intro blog is long enough (smile), so in THE PINK CHALLENGE #2 I will collate a little checklist and maybe a video link of my friend sharing some things that helped in her journey!
It is a "journey" and together we can believe to see multitudes of women (and men) overcome and conquer this disease with hope, faith, encouragement, support, wisdom, medical intervention and the love and rescue of a God in heaven, who is not willing that any should perish (John 3:16).
To be continued ...
